I acknowledge that my home and my business are on lands that had been occupied by indigenous peoples for more than 10,000 years, including the diverse Adena and Hopewell cultures, and, more recently, the Shawnee and Delaware Tribes. I honor their generations of stewardship, and I recognize that their removal and oppression are what have allowed me to reside and work here. Much of my work involves the material culture of those who removed and oppressed the indigenous inhabitants, as well as those who oppressed and excluded all people of color. I am, therefore, resolved to seek out and listen to those heretofore silent voices, and help bring their important stories to the fore.

What do you like about being involved with the Society of Winterthur Fellows?
There is, of course, the practical benefit: serious networking! More importantly, I owe so much to the program and to that wonderful place, Winterthur. I am not able to contribute financially as much as I would like, so serving the Society give me an opportunity to give back to the Winterthur program in a meaningful way. What is your favorite room at Winterthur? The Court. It was a picture of that room that first introduced me to Winterthur. Beyond that, an indoor badminton court converted to a faux street using real house façades...it epitomizes the passion and collecting philosophy of Henry Francis du Pont. A Riddle: What do you get when you cross Brock Jobe, a collector's home in Concord, Massachusetts, and a singing lobster. Answer: A perfect birthday party. What words of advice do you have for current Fellows? We are all expected, I think, to use our Winterthur education to make a contribution to the field. But don't get too hung up on making that contribution during your nine-to-five job. Whether through volunteer service, independent research, or opportunity-driven projects, there are plenty of ways to contribute. Keep an open mind. |
