Meet the Board:
Matt Thurlow is Executive Director of The Decorative Arts Trust in Philadelphia.
What do you like about being involved with the Society of Winterthur Fellows?
I appreciate the chance to promote the work of fellow alumni and encourage the next generation of museum professionals and decorative arts historians while remaining connected to an amazing institution.
What class prepared you best for your career and why?
Brock Jobe's Introduction to Connoisseurship, taught me to look closely and critically while also encouraging me to trust my instincts when reading objects. Plus, his infectious enthusiasm and concerted effort to ensure that students met collectors, colleagues, and donors were enormously beneficial.
What is your favorite room at Winterthur?
The Chinese Parlor is the quintessential Winterthur Room. A 20th-century confection showing du Pont's mastery of design featuring a mixture of great genuine antiques with those that fooled even the master collector, all backed by that unforgettable wallpaper carefully blended into the architectural framework of a modified 1830s house.
